FBI Steps in to Help with Search for Missing Girl
Spring City, February 1, 1999 — In the almost two weeks since Devon, a thirteen-year-old girl being treated at the Pennhurst Asylum, went missing, local authorities have failed to find any substantial leads. As the case continues to grow in scope, the investigation has been turned over to the FBI. Members of the Philadelphia field office have been assigned to Spring City for the duration of the investigation.
While there is no official word from the Sheriff’s department, some wonder if the early accusations about Devon’s mental state have adversely affected the case. The initial danger warnings were lifted, following the analysis of internal CCTV footage.
The FBI and local authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Search parties have been organized for the upcoming weeks for the area surrounding the Asylum. Special Agent Mindy Dallas said they were not opposed to casting a wider net into neighboring communities but were hoping they would not need to do so.
This paper has been on this disappearance since the story first broke on January 20. The case is a tragic example of the neglect Pennhurst has been accused of. When speaking to the lawyer representing Devon’s family, all they would say is they were not opposed to taking legal action against the hospital.
As always the community is encouraged to reach out to authorities with any tips about the disappearance. Even something as simple as suspicious activity could lead to a major development in the case. A dedicated line has been set up for anonymous submissions. 555-DEVON (555-3386).
